Basketball betting: points, lines and overtime
Basketball is high-scoring, so most markets are less about who wins and more about by how much and how many points in total. The key difference from football is overtime: basketball has no draws, and many markets include it. We do not quote odds or leagues; they vary between operators, Fenikss included.
Main markets
- Moneyline (winner) — usually including overtime, since there is no draw.
- Point spread — points added to or taken from a team; you win if the result with the spread goes your way.
- Points total — over or under a line the bookmaker sets.
- Quarters and halves — the same markets for part of the game.
- Team total — one team’s points.
Overtime and settlement
If regulation ends level, the teams play overtime. Full-game moneyline, spread and total markets usually include it. Quarter markets do not, because they cover only that quarter. Check the market description on your slip — the words “including overtime” change the outcome.
The .5 line
Totals and spreads often end in .5 — 160.5 points, for example. That rules out the result landing exactly on the line, which would refund the stake. If the line is a whole number and the result matches it, the stake usually returns to your balance. That is a settlement rule, not an error.
In-play betting
Basketball moves fast and in-play odds change after every basket, which tempts frequent betting. Confirming an in-play bet may be delayed or rejected if the odds moved. A rejected bet leaves the stake on your balance — check you did not place it twice.
Balance and withdrawal
The stake is reserved at placement and winnings credited after settlement. Cash-out credits your playing balance, not your bank. Money reaches your account after a withdrawal request and the operator’s checks.
Staying in control
During the season there are many games and in-play bets are quick. Set a budget and a number of bets per day or week. Tools on Responsible gambling; bet types on Bet types; section home: Sports betting.
