Responsible gambling: control before, not after
The cashier is where responsible gambling becomes practical. That is where deposit limits are set, where you see how much has gone in, and where the temptation appears to cancel a withdrawal “to play a bit more”. This page gathers tools that work and signs that it is time to stop. The site is for readers aged 18 and over.
Limits to set straight away
- Deposit limit — per day, week or month, set before your first deposit.
- Loss limit, if the operator offers one.
- Session time limit or a reminder.
- A timeout — a temporary account block.
Lowering a limit usually takes effect at once; raising it comes with a delay. That is protection, not inconvenience. Which tools a casino offers is in its account settings or terms.
Warning signs
- You cancel a withdrawal to keep playing.
- You deposit to win back losses.
- You play with money meant for bills, or borrow to play.
- You hide gambling from people close to you or feel restless when not playing.
- Sessions run longer than planned, again and again.
Where to get help
In Latvia: the specialised help line for gamblers and their families, +371 293 232 02 (azartaatkariba.lv). We could not confirm the line’s current hours, whether calls are free or whether consultations are available in English or Russian — please check the website. Family members who are worried about someone can call too.
Outside Latvia: look for your country’s national gambling help service; we do not list services we have not verified for your country.
Self-exclusion in Latvia
If limits are not enough, Latvian residents can ask to be added to the self-exclusion register (Pašatteikušos personu reģistrs) kept by VID, the State Revenue Service. The minimum term is 12 months. The register continued after supervision passed from IAUI to VID on 1 April 2026. The procedure is described on VID’s site; our summary is on Self-exclusion.
A budget that actually works
Decide what you can spend on entertainment in a month — as you would for cinema or concerts — and treat it as spending, not investment. When it is gone, the month’s play is over. A win is not a reason to raise the budget; it is a reason to request a payout.
The cashier as a control tool
- Deposit from one account or card only — the total is easier to see on your statement.
- If you win, request a payout straight away and do not cancel it.
- Set a card limit and notifications in your bank app.
- Skip bonuses that make you play more than planned — see Bonuses.
